United Master class gives Ole a breather.

Ronaldo’s sublime finish put United ahead against Tottenham

Manchester has managed one point in four games, a stat that has seen them drift down the EPL log, and these have fans and pundits questioning Ole’s competency as the boss at Man United.

Last Saturdays trashing by Liverpool added to Ole’s and Man United misery, the reds ran riot to the amazement of the home fans, the result saw fans leaving before the last whistle was sounded.

Man United put up a classic display to save Ole Gunnar his seat, knowing full well a defeat at Spurs could call for his seat. The stars rose to the occasion and they made their coach and fans proud momentarily.

Christiano Ronaldo and Edison Cavani stepped up their game as Ronaldo broke the deadlock in the 39′ with a superb finish to put Manchester United ahead, also giving an assist to Cavani in the second half. Cavani finished off with a pro touch to make it two for the red devils.

Matic was brought in to stabilize the defense and also give support to the backline in what seemed to be a game won, Matic laid a through ball to Marcus Rashford that was brought in in place of Ronaldo, Rashford bent the ball beating Lloris for the third time, making it three goals to nil against Tottenham.

Ole changed his formation this time, the 3-5-2 seem to accommodate Ronaldo and Cavani well enough, while also using wing-backs with Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Luke Shaw doing most of the flank runs.

There were some thrilling moments in the first half, Son Heung-Min played the ball too high from a Luca Moura lob, while Cavani’s shot was blocked.

Cavani’s header was not properly directed at goal as he headed wide from a Bruno Fernandes square ball. Cristian Romero tapped the ball home from an Eric Dier flick on which was ruled as offside by the VAR.

Ronaldo opened the scoring from a well-timed Bruno Fernandes up through the ball, the Portugal talisman met the perfect ball with a half volley which he hit with precision and power that left Hugo Lloris searching for the ball.

Ronaldo was on the second but this time he was ruled for off-side. The second for the night was scored by Cavani from a Ronaldo’s through ball, that was beautifully tucked home by the South American star.

Tottenham looked a shadow of themselves as they posed no real threat to Manchester United, David De Gea was on holiday all through the evening. Spur’s display was so disappointing.

Harry Kane was lost in most parts of the game. The Spurs man was not the same man the club put up for 150 pounds some months ago, his form since the beginning of the season has been below par, he tried forcing a move to Manchester City, the deal did not happen, perhaps the failed deal had affected him.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s tactics left everybody in awe as the team never made any threat, they kept possession but never went forward.

Manchester United’s work should be applauded as they played as a team and defensively they were very compact making it hard for Tottenham to penetrate.

Cavani celebrates his goal against Tottenham

Manchester United sits three points below Manchester City who they will be playing next week. Ole could have escaped the threat of Tottenham, but any slip could turn attention towards him again as they prepare to face Manchester City next week.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has a breather to plan the game in the Champions League and that of Manchester City next week. On the other side, things are not looking good for Tottenham as they have won five and lost five of their last ten matches, this run leaves them in the eighth position of the EPL log.

Before now, there has been discussion as to how Solskjaer would play Ronaldo and Cavani together, today proved they could be paired up front in a 3-5-2 formation and it did work perfectly well as they showed they could and understand each other perfectly well, this could be seen in the build-up to the second goal.

Steven Bergwijn came in for Luca Moura 9 minutes into the second half, the home fans booed their own suggesting they were not happy with their display, this, in turn, mounts pressure on Nuno Espirito, this is their third defeat in four matches without a goal.

The last time United won Tottenham with a wide goal margin was in 2007 when they won by four goals to nil. today’s result is their biggest win against Tottenham since 2007.

Tottenham on the other side has lost two home games by a margin of three goals this season, they lost to Chelsea by three goals also. Spurs have conceded at least one goal in their last seven matches, having won their first three matches with a goal margin, this would be their longest run since November/December 2019 without a clean sheet.

The last time Spurs played without a shot on target in the Premier League home game was back in 2013 against Liverpool, it was shocking to see their talisman Harry Kane go on to play for 90mins without registering a shot on target not to talk of scoring.

Ole was asked if he was relieved of pressure at the moment and the Norwegian tactician had this to say,’ this is what we do for a living, we are constantly under pressure, Tottenham is past us, but we have the UCL and a game against City next week, the pressure is always there and you can’t run from it.”

Ronaldo on the other hand was quizzed about the game, “we played well today compared to the last one against Liverpool, the boys are happy and was ready to play for the manager, it’s a happy feeling generally that we did this, now we look to the challenge and fixtures ahead.

United is away to Atalanta in the UCL, and up against City over the weekend, while Spurs will be playing Vitesse in the Europa Conference League, and also a game over the weekend against Everton.
