The community shield is a contest in the English Premier League where the league winner take on the winner of English FA cup winner. Liverpool and Arsenal emerged as the champions of both league and FA cup and they were to face each other in the Community shield. The Community Shield is the first main trophy that teams vie for in the English top-flight football.
The Coronavirus dealt a devastating blow to the world and as such affected everything. The English Premier League are not left behind, the calendar for the entire year has been distorted, football matches are being played behind closed doors without the fans as can be seen in the completion of the various league matches and the UEFA champions league.
Michael Arteta was signed less than a year and he is turning fortune around for Arsenal Football Club, despite finishing 8th in the league last season, they are on their way to the EUROPA League thanks to their victory at the FA Cup final. The coach that was second in command at Manchester City under Guardiola has two trophies to his name now as he beat Jurgen Klopp to the Community Shield Cup.
Liverpool lifted the Premier League after close to three decades courtesy of Jurgen Klopp master class of coaching, he introduced something new to the game and took Liverpool to another level.
Wimbley was home to the Community Shield and captain Aubameyang is gradually being referred to as the “King of Wimbley”. Will he surpass the record created by Didier Drogba? only time will tell.
The match was fully loaded with both teams big guns, featuring the trio of Mo Sallah, Firmino, and Sadio Mane, Trent Arnold was the only omission of the game as he was replaced by Neco Williams.
The Reds laboured in the first half as they found it hard to put a serious test for the Arsenal defence and goalkeeper Martinez, bot team shared possession towards the end of the first half.
Aubameyang opened the scoring for the Gunners in the 12′ with a sublime finish in what can be referred to as a typical ‘Thiery Henry finish’, thanks to a Bukayo Saka brilliant assist.
Allison was beaten completely as the ball found the bottom right corner of the post to gift the Gunners the lead. The goal restored confidence in their play, Liverpool, on the other hand, was trying to break them to get an equalizer as they pressed.
There missed chances to double the lead before half time and this time the main culprit was Edward Nketiah.
Liverpool pressed Arsenal after the half time as players began to show tired legs. Liverpool made changes that further sparked their attack as Takumi Minamino was brought in for Neco Williams, Naby Keita for evergreen captain James Milner, Roberto Firmino for Courtis Jones.
Liverpool pressed Arsenal till they broke them down as they persisted, one would give it to Arteta and his boys the way they dealt with the pressure. David Luiz has been reborn under Arteta as the coach has backed the under-fire former Chelsea man, he marshalled the defence in dramatic form that made it hard for Jurgen Klopp and his men to breakthrough.
The goal came in the 73′ from the substitute Takumi Minamino, the ball was played in the box eighteen as the Liverpool attackers interchanged passes, the ball dropped in free space in front of incoming Minamino that slotted home the ball to beat Martinez.
Martinez was another standout performer for the night as he made some great saves, a one on one with Sadio Mane, with rumours of him departing Arsenal who knows what will be going in the heads of Arsenal chiefs concerning his future and also with their first choice Bernd Leno fit again.
The game went into penalties after the full time whistle. Arsenal scored all five and Liverpool young attacker Rhian Brewster hit the woodwork as he hit the ball with plenty of power to crown Arsenal Community Shield Champions once again. This is the 16th time Arsenal is lifting the Community Shield as at against Manchester United’s 21 Community Shield.
Aubameyang is in the best form of a single season as the captain took the last kick for Arsenal when they needed it the most and he did not disappoint them as he beat Allison Becker beautifully well sending him to the opposite direction for Arsenal to cling the trophy. The Arsenal captain is yet to put pen to paper as his contract talk stalls, the club and fans alike have the belief that a compromise would eventually be reached.
Aubameyang was criticized that he found it hard to turn up his A-game against big teams, he has shut his critics up by scoring against Chelsea, City, and Liverpool, cementing his name as a world-class striker. The striker has scored 5 important goals in 3 matches for the Gunnars in 6 weeks.
After the match, Jurgen Klopp added ‘if there is anyone to blame for the defeat, I am to be blamed because I put Brewster there to take the shot because he is a fine finisher’.
While a whole lot of people downplay the significance of the FA Cup, the victory against Liverpool and in their last 3 matches is more thrilling.
Aubameyang’s scoring form in the new Wimbley stadium is unparallel and can’t be matched with any player at the moment, except for the ex-Chelsea Ivorian attacker: Didier Drogba. The Ivorian impact on the Wimbley stadium was enormous and it is one Aubameyang should be aiming to break, Drogba scored in FA finals in 2007, 2009, 2010, and 2012 respectively and not only did he score in those seasons but he also helped the Blues to victory as well.
Drogba was so lethal for the Blues that he sank other teams those seasons remarkably a self destruct goal against Tottenham in 2009, 2010, 2012 respectively.
There is still a distance to go for the Arsenal man to surpass Didier Drogba as the king of Wembley stadium, clearly, he is not doing bad and he is in the right trajectory should he continue with this fine form, who knows what could happen in the nearest future for the Gabonese striker?
