Liverpool Football Club top the EPL table into the New Year is the news making the round in England as we speak with seven points clear Man City and six points clear Tottenham Hotspur, they are the league leaders now. So many questions have been asked by both fans and pundits alike if they can break the hoodoo this time having won it last in 1990. The club has gone through some kind of transition with a change in an era of players and management all aiming to see if they could break the jinx to bring back the title home to Liverpool as their fans have long waited this moment, the club has seen players in Steven Gerald, Robbie Fowler, Jamie Carragher, etc. all come and gone without lifting the EPL though they have recorded success in Europe where they have lifted the UEFA Champions League Five times, the last one was in 2005.
Man City have lost two matches in a row and that has gifted Liverpool the chance to surpass them, so the question now is, can they maintain the momentum? Many know them to be inconsistent as many times they have led in the EPL log and end up losing the title to another club as a result of inconsistency but we are seeing a different Liverpool altogether as they have also qualified for the round of sixteen of the UEFA Champions League, technically speaking they have the crop of players to bring the cup home and also with a good manager in Jürgen Klopp, the German tactician has brought in a new philosophy as they hope to do the treble this season having reached the UEFA Champions League final last year but was knocked out by Real Madrid.
Liverpool sold Philippe Coutinho to Barcelona for a whopping sum of €160 million (£142m), Klopp was able to use the money to bring in reinforcement that made the vacuum created by the sale of Coutinho not felt, after the sale they bought Virgil Van Dijk and goalkeeper Alisson and these two players have really contributed to Liverpool establishing themselves as League contenders, some quarters have tagged Van Dijk as the best defender in Europe with the defender living up to the hype by recent display and showing superb consistency, he is certainly one of the best defenders in Europe.
Aside from Van Dijk and Allison, Liverpool has also witnessed the teen sensations of Alexander Arnold and Gomez as the two players have performed beyond their respective ages. Andy Robertson is another revelation that emerged from the squad, he has shown characters that can be likened to the best left full back in the world, a comparison has been here and there as he is being compared to left full back greats like Brazil’s Roberto Carlos, Marcelo, etc. Some say the sale of Coutinho was not badly felt and this can be seen in their games and the results thus far.
